breast self-exam

The breast self-exam is a precautionary procedure in which you can become familiar with your breasts. Becoming familiar with the way your breasts look and feel can help you notice unusual changes that your doctor should be notified about. The earlier you catch an unusual change the more successful the treatment.

give yourself a breast self-exam in four steps

step 1 Stand straight, with your shoulders squared, and look closely at your breasts in the mirror: Are they their usual size, shape and color? If anything looks different, e.g. dimpling, puckering, swelling, redness or rash, or if your nipple has become inverted (pushed inward), alert your doctor.

step 2 Raise your arms over your head and look again. Now, gently squeeze each nipple between your pointer finger and thumb to check for discharge -- it shouldn't be yellow or tinted with red.

step 3 Lie down and put your left hand under your head and use your right hand to examine your left breast by using the first three fingers of your hand to smoothly, but firmly, check the breast by moving your hand in a circular motion. Begin with a soft touch and increase the pressure until you can feel the tissue and then rib cage. Make sure to cover the entire breast--from collarbone, to armpit, to cleavage! (Repeat for right breast).

step 4 Stand up and repeat step 3, checking again for any lumps or differences in the tissue of your breasts.
